In-Toeing and Out-Toeing: Why Your Child’s Walk Looks Different
As a parent, it’s completely normal to notice the way your child walks — especially if something seems a little off. Maybe their toes point inward or outward instead of straight ahead. It might look unusual, but don’t panic. This is something we see often at The Foot and Lower Limb Clinic, and in many cases, it’s nothing to worry about.
Let’s break it down in simple terms.
What Is In-Toeing and Out-Toeing?
In-toeing (often called "pigeon-toed") is when your child’s toes point inward while they walk or run.
Out-toeing is when their feet turn outward instead.
It can be quite noticeable — especially when they’re running or walking fast — and you might wonder if it’s something that needs to be fixed.
Why Does It Happen?
Children grow and develop at different speeds, and their walking patterns can be affected by how their bones and muscles are aligned. These are a few common reasons:
Twisting in the hip or thigh bones (called femoral anteversion or retroversion)
Curved shin bones (known as tibial torsion)
Foot shape or posture
Family history — it can run in the family
Most of the time, in-toeing and out-toeing are part of normal development, especially in toddlers and young children.
When Should You Get It Checked?
In many cases, these walking styles improve as your child grows. But it’s a good idea to see a podiatrist if you notice:
Frequent tripping or clumsiness
Pain in the legs, feet, or knees
Walking looks very uneven or worsens over time
One foot turns more than the other
They seem to avoid walking or running
It’s always better to check early and get reassurance — or support — if needed.
How We Can Help
At The Foot and Lower Limb Clinic, we offer gentle, child-friendly assessments to check your child’s foot posture, leg alignment, and walking pattern.
If treatment is needed, we may suggest:
Simple stretches or exercises to support muscle strength and flexibility
Custom orthotics (insoles) to gently guide foot position
Advice on footwear that supports growing feet
Monitoring – sometimes the best treatment is simply keeping an eye on things
We’ll always explain everything clearly and involve you every step of the way.
Reassurance for Parents
We know it can be a bit worrying to see your child walk differently. But remember — many children grow out of in-toeing and out-toeing naturally. And when extra support is needed, we’re here to help.
Early assessment means peace of mind now and healthy steps for the future.
