This assessment is required if the patient complains of pain of the lower limb (back, hips, knees, ankle, or any areas of the foot). This is pain not associated with an acute injury but pain that has gradually increased for no apparent reason, known as abnormal biomechanics. E.g. Knee pain when running, heel pain, shin and calf pain, achilles tendinosis, or hip pain not due to arthritis. Pain from bunions or toe joints are also areas for concern.
Your feet are amazing!
They have:
- 26 bones
- 33 joints
- 98 muscles and ligaments
These parts work together to help you stand, walk, run, and stay balanced. But if even one part isn’t working properly, it can cause pain in your feet, knees, hips, or back.
We carefully check how you move when you’re standing, walking, or running. This helps us spot:
Abnormal gait: How you walk or run may be affected by joint or muscle imbalances.
Structural issues: Problems like weak muscles or ligaments.
Root causes of pain: For example, if one leg is longer than the other, it can cause pain in your back, knees, or feet.
We use our hands to check how well your body moves and works.
This includes:
- Checking the range of motion in your joints (like your ankles and knees).
- Testing the strength of your muscles and the health of your ligaments.
- Reviewing your footwear to ensure it supports your everyday and sports activities, like running or playing football.
We use advanced technology to look at how you walk or run in detail.
- Pressure plate analysis: A special mat records how your feet touch the ground.
- Video gait analysis: A camera captures your movements so we can slow them down and see any issues that aren’t visible at normal speed.
This technology helps us find even the smallest problems to ensure we create the best plan for a pain-free outcome.

Your bespoke plan may consist of an orthotic, strengthening and stretching exercises, and footwear recommendations to assist in recovery.
The clinic has a unique Sensor Medica CADCAM design which enables the practitioner to use data from the pressure plate to make you a customised orthotic should you need it. You may also be referred to another professional such as a physiotherapist, osteopath or surgeon for further investigation.
