Children’s Foot Problems: When Should You See a Chiropodist?

Children’s Foot Problems: When Should You See a Chiropodist?

May 28, 20253 min read

It’s easy to overlook foot health in children—after all, they bounce back from just about everything, don’t they?

But here’s the thing: foot problems in kids are more common than most people realise, and spotting issues early can prevent bigger problems down the line.

At The Foot & Lower Limb Clinic, we often see worried parents asking questions like:

  • “Is it normal for my child to walk like that?”

  • “Why are their shoes wearing unevenly?”

  • “Do they need insoles or is it just a phase?”

If you’ve been wondering the same, you’re not alone—and this post will help you know when it’s time to bring your child in for a check-up.

Common Foot Problems in Children

Let’s start with a few of the things we see most often:

👣 Flat Feet

It’s normal for children to have flat feet when they’re very young. But if it continues past the age of 6 or causes pain, it’s worth getting checked. Some children may need supportive insoles (orthotics) to help with balance and posture.

🚶‍♂️ In-toeing or Out-toeing

This means their feet turn inwards or outwards when they walk. It’s quite common, but if it’s affecting how they walk, run, or play—or if one foot seems more affected than the other—a chiropodist can assess their gait and recommend next steps.

🦶 Heel Pain (Sever’s Disease)

Active kids, especially those going through growth spurts, sometimes get pain in their heels. This is often linked to Sever’s disease, which sounds scary but is actually a common, treatable condition.

Warts and Verrucas

These little bumps on the soles of the feet can be painful and stubborn. They spread easily in places like swimming pools or changing rooms. Chiropody treatments can help remove them safely without harsh chemicals.

👟 Footwear Problems

Kids often wear shoes that are too tight, too loose, or completely worn out (we get it—growth spurts happen fast!). Poor footwear can cause blisters, ingrown nails, and pressure points.

When Should You Book an Appointment?

Here are a few signs it’s time to see a chiropodist:

  • Your child limps or avoids putting pressure on one foot

  • They complain of foot, ankle, or leg pain, especially during or after activity

  • Their shoes wear out unevenly (e.g., one side more than the other)

  • They have trouble keeping up with other kids

  • You notice changes in how they walk or run

  • They have a recurrent verruca, ingrown toenail, or hard skin

If you're not sure whether what you're seeing is normal, that’s okay. We'd much rather check things early and give you peace of mind.

How We Can Help

At The Foot & Lower Limb Clinic, our team offers gentle, child-friendly care in a relaxed setting. We take time to assess your child’s feet, walking style, and posture. If needed, we can create custom insoles, offer footwear advice, and provide treatments that are safe and suitable for growing feet.

Don’t Wait and Worry—Get It Checked

Children grow fast—and so do their feet. Small issues now can affect the way they move later in life. The sooner we spot a problem, the easier it is to treat.
